Twenty years ago, I was the principal investigator for lawyers representing men and women tortured at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003. The lawyers, including the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Susan Burke, filed suit in 2008 against two military contractors hired to operate the prison.

On Monday, April 15, 2024, almost twenty years later, the case against CACI, the contractor that provided interrogators at Abu Ghraib, finally went to a jury trial in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia. While my formal role on the legal team ended some time ago, I was proud to attend the first two days of the trial. This is a historic moment as torture survivors are finally getting their day in an American courtroom.

The testimony is emotionally difficult to hear but important for us all to remember. Whatever the jury’s verdict, history has been made with this case.
